IGO purchased the Long Nickel Mine from WMC Resources Ltd in 2002 and turned this operation into a significant cash generating asset that has fueled the company's exploration program. The Long Mine still has a reserve mine life out to 2011, but it resource base will keep it in production for many more years after then.

IGO currently has seven nickel exploration projects of significance and six gold projects. The jewel in the gold camp is the Tropicana JV with AngloGold Ashanti which is proving up a multi-million ounce new gold province in WA.

Chris Bonwick is a renowned geologist with a proven track record of successful mineral exploration and team management. Chris worked at WMC for ten years as an open-cut and underground mine geologist, and senior supervising geologist at WMC's Kalgoorlie Exploration Division. In 1991, he left to join Samantha Gold NL where he was employed as Chief Geologist, moving in 1994 to Resolute Limited again as Chief Geologist.
Chris has led numerous teams that have successfully made virgin gold discoveries, including the Chalice (which returned $100 million profit in just over three years and won "Diggers and Dealer's Discovery of the Year" in 1994), Redeemer and Indee deposits, as well as near-mine gold discoveries in Australia (Hill 50 satellites and Marymia satellites) and Africa.
