The heat is on in SA and its no pumpkin for the Cinderella state this time. This month we present three of the most active explorers at work on the Gawler Proterozoic Gold Belt and the Olympic Copper-Gold Belt provinces. The Gawler is the belt sweeping down from the upper left with the Stuart Shelf in it (Challenger gold mine) and runs through the Eyre Peninsula. The Olympic Copper-Gold Belt is to the right and runs parallel down to the York Peninsula. In the Gawler hunt Adelaide Resources has turned up an entire new gold field surrounding its Barns deposit using the CSIRO’s brilliant gold-in-calcrete method. In itself this method is a revolution for exploring the very old and gold depleted plains of South Australia.

Understanding how these geochemical X-ray glasses work is essential for anyone seeking to follow the action. Keith Yates will open the batting with an explanation and a state-wide backdrop and move onto the latest news of Adelaide Resources’ exciting Barns discovery story.

Is it a new Telfer? Hot on his heels, Rohan Williams will tell how Avoca staked nearly a fifth of the state in a 16,000 sq km staking swoop and illustrate how it then rapidly culled back to a manageable set of targets and holdings. As he speaks, Avoca will be drilling its second hole into an Olympic Dam-style target on the York Peninsula.

Simultaneously Red Metal will be starting the drilling of targets surrounding the 19th century flagship Moonta copper-gold mine on the York Peninsula. Rob Rutherford will open up on the Red Metal rationale for choosing the ‘hot systems’. Referring to the Peak Denison Ranges project it has with Rio and BHPB he says ‘The Prominent Hill discovery made everyone realise that Olympic Dam is not a freak… and that the look alike can be in subtle anomalies that you can easily miss’. The majors are right behind this exploration boom but this time through JVs and share registers. Don’t miss it!
